WSL 2023-24 Season Preview

The new WSL season kicks off this weekend and we're in for another good season. There will again be lots to play for and now it's time to predict where each club will finish.

ARSENAL

KEY PLAYER: ALESSIA RUSSO

The Gunners had two record bids turned down for Russo in January and had to wait till the end of her Man United contract to snap her up. They lacked an out and out centre forward last season and after another good summer with England, she could be the difference for the Gunners this season.

PREDICTION: 2nd

Going out the Champions League early is a blow but it could benefit them. Getting players back from injury will be a big plus and once the majority of them are back, they could push Chelsea close.

ASTON VILLA

KEY PLAYER: RACHEL DALY

Not many people thought that Daly would be playing centre forward and win a golden boot in her first season at Villa after going into the season as England's first choice left back. Her 22 goals last season were crucial in Villa's rise up the table and Carla Ward will need her to have a similar kind of season this year if they're to reach the heights they hit last season.

PREDICTION: 5th

Daly's goals took them another level last season alongside some good signings made in January. With the versatile forward still around and the squad looking reasonably strong, they look set for another good season.

BRIGHTON

KEY PLAYER: KATIE ROBINSON

Robinson was arguably the Seagulls' best player last season in what was an eventful season for them. Her 4 goals and 6 assists last season were crucial to Brighton staying up last season and they'll need her to repeat that this season if they're to have a more sustainable season.

PREDICTION: 9th

Signing a proven goal scorer in Pauline Bremer is a massive boost plus they have a good squad mixed with experience and youth. Because of this they should avoid another season like last.

BRISTOL CITY

KEY PLAYER: SHANIA HAYLES

Hayles was the Robins' top scorer last season with 11 goals as they won promotion and they'll need her to repeat those numbers this season if they're to stay up. Their chances of survival could depend on her.

PREDICTION: 12th

They might have some players with WSL experience but I don't think their squad has enough quality. With the league looking stronger this season, it could be a struggle for them.

CHELSEA

KEY PLAYER: SAM KERR

Kerr has established herself as one of the best strikers in the world over the last few years and her goals have taken Chelsea onto another level. She'll again be vital if the blues are to win the title for the fifth straight season.

PREDICTION: 1st

Their squad still looks as strong as it always has done. With this and a manager who knows what it takes to win a title, they'll definitely be champions again.

EVERTON

KEY PLAYER: KATJA SNOEIJS

The Toffees didn't have many goals in them last season but Snoeijs still managed to score 8 times for them last season as they had a steady season. They'll need her to bag more this season if they're to push up the league.

PREDICTION: 7th

Losing Izzy Christiansen to retirement is a blow but they still have a decent enough squad to have another solid season. They might not have many goals in them, but they should still have enough for another mid-table finish.

LEICESTER

KEY PLAYER: JUTTA RANTALA

Goals has been a problems for the Foxes since they've been in the WSL and in Rantala they've signed someone who knows where the back of the net is. She scored 11 goals in all competitions in Sweden last season and if she can hit the ground running with Leicester, they could stay up.

PREDICTION: 11th

They've got some momentum on board from their strong end to last season. If they can carry that into this season, they should be safe.

LIVERPOOL

KEY PLAYER: FUKA NAGANO

The Japanese midfielder played a key role for the reds when she joined in January and will be expected to play a bigger role this season in her first full campaign at the club. She's involved in everything they do when in possession and can run a game from midfield with her passing ability agility.

PREDICTION: 6th

They had a solid first season last season mainly helped by their January signings. With some decent signings made over the summer, they could kick on.

MAN CITY

KEY PLAYER: KHADIJA SHAW

It might've been a tough season for City last season, but Shaw still stepped up with an impressive 20 goals. City will need her to repeat that kind of form this season if they're to finish in the top three.

PREDICTION: 3rd

Not being in the Champions League could benefit them this season as can keeping hold of their best players. If they can start better than they did last season, they could be in the mix for the title.

MAN UNITED

KEY PLAYER: MARY EARPS

Earps is probably the best keeper in the world right now because of the world class saves she makes time and time again. It was crucial that United kept hold of her during the summer following interest from Arsenal and with United in the Champions League this season, she has the chance to test herself on the biggest stage in club football.

PREDICTION: 4th

Losing Russo is a massive blow and especially to a rival. With this and Champions League football thrown into the equation, it could be a tough season for them.

TOTTENHAM

KEY PLAYER: BETH ENGLAND

England's goals were crucial in Spurs staying up last season after she arrived from Chelsea in January and her form earned her a recall to the England squad for the World Cup. Spurs will need her to carry that form into this season if they're to avoid another relegation dogfight.

PREDICTION: 8th

It will be interesting to see how they'll do with England leading their attack over a whole season. If they can keep her fit, they should definitely do better than last season.

WEST HAM

KEY PLAYER: DAGNY BRYNJARSDOTTIR

The Hammers skipper was their top goal scorer in all competition last season with 11 goals and is one of the very few goal threats they have. If the Hammers are to stay out of a relegation dogfight this season, their need their Icelandic captain to deliver the goods once again.

PREDICTION: 10th

Skinner has had a full summer to build her own team and she'll be desperate for her team to start well after a poor end to last season. They might not score many goals, but they should still have enough to stay up.
