Premier League Predictions: Matchweek 5

SATURDAY:

WEST HAM V CHELSEA

West Ham have had a good record in this fixture recently and they won here 3-1 last season around this stage of the season.

It hasn't been a fantastic start to the season for the Hammers, but I wouldn't judge them just yet as their new signings are still adjusting to their new surroundings. And they made a lot of them over the summer.

A lot was said about Chelsea heading into the season and in all fairness to them, they've made a fairly decent start. They would of course love to be higher up the league, but two wins and a draw from their opening represents a decent start.

Both clubs spent a lot of money in the summer and if one of them is to look more like a team in this one, it's West Ham.

Chelsea might've started the season better in terms of results, but with the recent record that the Hammers have against them in this fixture and the threat they pose on the counter, I think Julen Lopetegui's side will come out on top here.

PREDICTION: 3-1

ASTON VILLA V WOLVES

Aston Villa were very good in their Champions League opener against Young Boys in midweek and whilst that win will give them confidence, tougher tests await them in that competition.

Being in the Champions League will test Villa this season, but I think they can handle the schedule as they have a big enough squad to compete on both fronts and they were in Europe last season, which gives them experience of handling a European schedule.

Wolves haven't got off to the best of starts after picking up just one points from their opening four league games alongside going out of the Carabao Cup to Brighton in midweek.

They've got some tough fixtures coming up starting with this one which is followed by games against Liverpool and City in two of their next three. It could be a while till they get that crucial first win.

I think Gary O'Neil's side will show some spirit here, but I think Villa's quality will be enough for them to come away victorious here.

PREDICTION: 2-0

FULHAM V NEWCASTLE

Fulham will be kicking themselves for not seeing out the game against West Ham last weekend where they conceded right at the very end after looking in control for most of the game.

Marco Silva's side went out of the Carabao Cup to Preston in midweek on penalties following a very long shootout. They fielded a reasonably strong team in that one and they'll be disappointed that they weren't able to see themselves through.

Newcastle have made their best start to a season since 1995/96, but they're yet to play anywhere near their best.

Eddie Howe will of course be delighted with the way his side have started the season, but he will want his side's performances to improve as the season progresses.

Fulham were strong at home for much of last season and I think they'll make it tough for Newcastle in this game. Especially with the Magpies being without a recognised striker due to Isak and Wilson both being injured.

But Newcastle do have other players who can chip in and because of that, I can see them nick a point here.

PREDICTION: 1-1

LEICESTER V EVERTON

Leicester are still chasing their first win back in the Premier League, but there were some positives to take from their draw at Crystal Palace last time out. They will however be disappointed that they weren't able to see the game out after being 2-0 up.

Everton have thrown away two-leads in each of their last two league games against Bournemouth and Aston Villa, and they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in midweek by Southampton on penalties.

The board nevertheless are still backing Sean Dyche to turn things around and this game could be a good start to doing that, with it being against another fellow struggler.

He definitely needs a result here and I can see him getting one. But not the one he and his team want as I think Leicester will have enough in them to earn a draw.

PREDICTION: 1-1

LIVERPOOL V BOURNEMOUTH

Liverpool were let down by poor decision making in the final third against Nottingham Forest last weekend which ended up costing them the game.

But they did respond well against AC Milan in the Champions League in midweek where they were much improved at the top end.

Bournemouth had their chances against Chelsea, but they weren't able to take them. They'll definitely rue missed that penalty in the first half.

The Cherries will definitely score here as they have some good attacking players who can cause Liverpool problems.

But I think the reds will have too much for them with the quality they have.

PREDICTION: 3-1

SOUTHAMPTON V IPSWICH

These two sides both came up together from the Championship last season are both waiting for their first win back in the top flight.

Southampton are still waiting for their first point, never mind their first win and I don't know where they're going to get it from.

They did start reasonably well against Man United last weekend, but they couldn't make the most of their early dominance. That is because they don't have someone to put the ball in the net and I think that is what will cost them this season.

Ipswich have had a tough start to life back in the Premier League, but their performances have been there and they have picked up points from their last two games against Fulham and Brighton, both of which were draws.

The Tractor Boys did the double over the Saints last season in the Championship and I think they'll get the better of them again here as I trust them more in front of goal.

PREDICTION: 0-2

TOTTENHAM V BRENTFORD

Spurs were underwhelming against Coventry in the Carabao Cup in midweek and they needed to bring on their big name players to change the game.

It hasn't been a great start to the season for Spurs after just one win from their opening four league games. But I don't think the pressure is on Postecoglou just yet as there is still a long way to go and time for him to turn things around.

Brentford also won in the cup in midweek against Leyton Orient after coming from behind.

They're set to be without striker Yoane Wissa for two months which is one massive blow for them.

Bryan Mbeumo is available for them, but without Wissa and new signing Igor Thiago, who is out till the new year, the Bees will need Kevin Schade to step up in Wissa's absence.

Thomas Frank's side will score here as they're a dangerous side on the counter and can exploit SPurs' defensive weakness.

But I think Spurs will bounce back and get the job done here with the quality they have in attack.

PREDICTION: 3-1

CRYSTAL PALACE V MAN UNITED

Crystal Palace are still waiting for their first win this season, but there have been some encouraging signs in their performances.

The did the double over United last season which included a 4-0 win in this fixture. They would certainly love a repeat of that here.

Man United showed their quality against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup in midweek and one player that stood out for them that night was Marcus Rashford, who is beginning to rediscover the form he showed two seasons ago after he netted twice in that game.

But I wouldn't say that he is back to his best just yet as we want to see him play like that on a regular basis. His performance that night and against Southampton last weekend will give him bags of confidence, but he still needs to deliver consistent performances for his team.

I have no idea which Man United side will turn up in this one because they're such an inconsistent side. They certainly were last season.

I fancy Palace to win here as I think they have a clear identity in how they play, unlike United. They also have players who can cause them problems in Eze, Mateta and Nketiah.

PREDICTION: 3-1

SUNDAY:

BRIGHTON V NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Both sides have started the season reasonably well and are both unbeaten with identical points tallies.

Brighton have looked promising under Fabian Hurzeler in terms of how they've played, which isn't too different to how they played under Roberto De Zerbi.

They looked very good against Wolves in the Carabao Cup in midweek and a run in that competition is realistic for them.

Nottingham Forest come into this game with a lot of confidence on board following their win at Liverpool last weekend where they were excellent from start to finish.

They've looked more like a Premier League side this season in that they're tougher to beat defensively and this could be the season where they kick on. It's looking that way due to how they've started.

Brighton will have most of the ball here as they're a possession based front footed side. But I do think Forest can hit them on the counter with the pace they have out wide.

They hit Liverpool on the counter last weekend and with the Seagulls likely to be open at the back, I can see Nuno's side nick a point here.

PREDICTION: 1-1

MAN CITY V ARSENAL

Man City were frustrated by Inter Milan in the Champions League in midweek which wasn't one of their finest displays.

There is a concern over Kevin De Bruyne coming into this game after he went off with a knock at half time in midweek.

De Bruyne will definitely be a miss for City if he doesn't play becase of the calibre of player he is, but City do have players who can step up in his absence. Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden being two examples.

Arsenal will also be without their chief creator in Martin Odegaard who is set for a longer spell on the side-lines than we all thought.

The Gunners did well without him and Declan Rice against Spurs last weekend as they found a way to win without being at their brilliant best.

They may have to play the same way in this one if they're to get something here as City are likely to dominate possession and create the most chances.

Even if City do or do not have De Bruyne available, I still think they'll win here as they're at home where they have such a strong record.

PREDICTION: 2-0
