Premier League 2020-21 season review: Every club rated

We have finally reached the end of the most congested season in Premier League history. There has been plenty of drama and controversy as well as shocks throughout the season and now it's time to rate each club's season out of 10.

ARSENAL - 5

Disappointing season overall as they failed to qualify for Europe for the first time in 26 seasons. They weren't helped by the poor start they had and despite their improvement after Christmas they gave themselves too much to do. They will be encouraged by the performances of their younger players but they still have a lot of work to do in order to return to the top six.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: BUKAYO SAKA

Saka carried Arsenal for pretty much the whole season and he's still only 19 which says it all about Arsenal's season. He stepped up when the seniors didn't and is set for a big future in the game.

ASTON VILLA - 7

A very good season of improvement. They were fighting for their lives last season and for them to finish 11th this season shows how much they've improved as a team. They made good signings in the summer with Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins being the main standouts as they improved Villa as both ends of the pitch. They've been the most improved team in the league this season.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: JACK GREALISH

It just had to be him. Grealish has been excellent for Villa once again with 6 goals and 10 assists as he continues to be an important player for Dean Smith's side. He was a big loss for Villa when he was out injured as they fell out of the race for Europe but when he's fit Villa are a better side because of what he brings.

BRIGHTON - 5

They secured survival which was their aim at the start of the season but with they chances they had throughout the season, they should've finished higher. They played some good football at times but didn't have the killer instinct in front of goal which dragged them into a relegation battle. They need a clinical centre forward to avoid another season of struggle next season.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: LEWIS DUNK

The Seagulls skipper was vital at both ends of the pitch this in making crucial interventions at one end and scoring important goals at the other. He makes Brighton a solid outfit defensively with his leadership and positioning for which he doesn't get enough credit for. He's arguably their most important player.

BURNLEY - 6

After a slow start the Clarets eventually got themselves going and did what they always do in securing Premier League survival. They didn't sign many players at the start of the season with Dale Stephens from Brighton being their only one. But Sean Dyche still managed to keep them up for another season which is something he deserves a lot of credit for.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: BEN MEE

The Clarets missed their captain at the start of the season because they weren't the same defensively. He makes that Burnley backline defensively solid because of his leadership, reading of the game and vital interventions for which he does not get enough credit for. He's been exactly that when he's played this season and without him the Clarets might've gone down.

CHELSEA - 6

A lot was expected of Chelsea at the start of the season because of the amount of money they spent and the players they brought in which had them down as outsiders for a potential title challenge. But that never materialised as they fell down to 9th in January which saw Frank Lampard unfairly sacked. Thomas Tuchel later came in and rescued their season by making them more solid defensively which helped them end the season in the top four. After a good end to the season with some good performances, the blues could possibly challenge for the title. But only if they sign a 20+ goal a season striker.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: MASON MOUNT

Some people said earlier in the season that Mount is only playing because Lampard likes him. That statement is wrong because Lampard picked him because he is a talented player. Mount has been Chelsea's most consistent performer this season and has developed into a key player for both and country.

CRYSTAL PALACE - 6

Solid season overall. Were never in trouble of going down but didn't have enough to push for a top 10 finish which is quite often the case for them. Their minimum target at the start of the season was survival and they did that fairly comfortably with a 14th place finish. Roy Hodgson has once again done a decent job and he leaves Palace as a firmly established Premier League club. But next season could be tough as a number of their players have contracts expiring which may prompt the new manager to overhaul the squad.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: WILFRIED ZAHA

No doubt about it. Zaha has once again proved his importance to Palace with 11 goals scored which marks his best return in the Premier League. He makes a huge difference to them whenever he plays and without him they lack his spark which was evident once again. They'll be desperate to keep him in the summer as there will surely be suitors for him.

EVERTON - 5

There was been progress having finished 1higher than they did last season but overall it's been a disappointing campaign. They missed out on European football which was what they expected to do at the start of the season because of the players they brought in and the manager they have. They were let down by their home form massively and they know they'll need to sort that out next season if they're to finish anywhere near Europe next season along with some new faces.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: DOMINIC CALVERT LEWIN

Calvert Lewin has been Everton's shining light this season with 16 goals which is a very good return for a striker of his age. He's improved a lot as a player and is on course to go to the Euros with England as second fiddle to Harry Kane.

FULHAM - 4

A disappointing campaign which ended in relegation. They had their moments in wins over Leicester and Liverpool but overall they didn't have enough to survive . They didn't have a lot of Premier League experience which every promoted team needs and they also didn't score enough goals and goals are what keep you in a division.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: JOACHIM ANDERSEN

The on loan defender was the captain during Tom Cairney's absence and he stepped up to it by putting in some solid displays at the back. He was a key part of Fulham's defensive improvement and he rarely put a foot wrong.

LEEDS - 8

Brilliant first season back after 16 seasons away. They would've taken survival at the start of the season and they went above that by finishing 9th which is very good for a newly promoted team. They played some excellent football throughout the season and they improved as the season progressed by adapting their game against the bigger teams.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: KALVIN PHILLIPS

Leeds really missed Phillips when he was out injured because they missed that deep lying playmaker who can play a killer pass behind a defence like he does. He's been key to how Leeds have played this season and has settled into Premier League life reasonably well.

LEICESTER - 8

They missed out on Champions League football again. But overall it was a good season. They pushed the big teams to the wire by spending more time in the top four than anybody else and they coped well with the Europa League distraction by using their squad well. Having won the FA Cup they'll be looking to win more silverware next season along with trying to get into that top four.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: HARVEY BARNES

He may have missed the final chunk of the season through injury but Barnes has still done enough to be my Leicester player of the season. He's improved his end product massively with 9 goals scored and his performances this season earned him an England call up. Such a shame his season cut short.

LIVERPOOL - 6

They managed to get top four when it looked unlikely but overall it's been a poor title defence from the champions. They suffered a lot with injuries and in particular their backline plus they missed the home support as they lost seven on bounce at home between January and March where the fans would've been behind them if they were there. But at least they ended the season well enough to earn a top four finish and a place in nexty seasons Champions League.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: FABINHO

The Brazilian did a good job at centre back when Van Dijk got injured by being a solid presence in that position. But that left a huge gap in the midfield where he later returned to add some steeliness and solidity which they lacked whilst he was in defence. He gave the other midfielders and forward players the licence to do what they want and having him back there played a huge role in the club finishing in the top four.

MAN CITY - 9

Fantastic season obviously because they were crowned champions. They started slowly but they eventually got themselves going by Christmas and were in the mix by January. Defensively they were a lot more solid thanks to the arrival of Ruben Dias and going forward they were good as always. They played with a false 9 for the majority of the campaign and it appeared to work with many players doing well in that position in the absence of club legend Sergio Aguero. The season could still be their best one yet with a Champions League final coming up.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: RUBEN DIAS

Dias was been the kind of centre back City were after following the departure of Vincent Kompany and he definitely showed us why. He's been their leader at the back at just 23 years of age and has made the other players around him better including John Stones. The impact he's made is similar to the one Virgil Van Dijk had when he joined Liverpool.

MAN UNITED - 7

A decent season overall and a good season of progress. They had an inconsistent start to the season which they then overcame as they briefly went top in January before ending the campaign in 2nd which shows progress. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves a lot of credit for this because of the pressure he was under earlier in the season. It's probably been their best season since Ferguson retired.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: BRUNO FERNANDES

No doubt about it. Fernandes has made such a big difference since his arrival last January and without him they would not have finished 2nd. He netted 18 goals and registered 12 assists this season which makes him a serious contender for Player of the Season.

NEWCASTLE - 6

A solid season in that they secured survival which was their minimum aim at the start of the season. But the fans don't feel satisfied because they want more from their team. The football at times hasn't been great as it's been dull and boring to watch which lead to Steve Bruce being criticized by the fans. But they did end the season strongly by playing more on the front foot which is what the fans will want to see more of next season.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: CALLUM WILSON

Wilson was what the Magpies lacked last season in a clinical no.9 and he proved that by scoring 12 goals. He was a big loss for them when he was out injured because they missed that target man who can put the ball in the back of the net and bring others into play. Without him Newcastle might've gone down.

SHEFFIELD UNITED - 2

A disastrous season which they'll want to forget. But at least they weren't as worse as Derby from the 2007-08 season because I seriously thought they would be after a terrible start where they picked up just two points before Christmas. They were bound for the drop back in November and from then they never looked like pulling off a great escape.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: AARON RAMSDALE

Ramsdale has been one of very few shining lights for the Blades this season by making lots of vital saves to keep them in games. He's easily been their most consistent performer and I wouldn't be surprised if another Premier League club was to sign him in the summer.

SOUTHAMPTON - 5

A season of two halves: A good first half followed by a terrible second half. The Saints were top of the league in November with potential European challenge ahead of them. But it wasn't to be as they slipped down to end in 15th and won just 5 times after the turn of the year. Injuries and tiredness definitely played a part as they have a reasonably small squad along with playing at a high intensity during a very congested season. But the Saints will still be disappointed with the season they've had. Especially after the start they made.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: JAMES WARD PROWSE

Ward Prowse has been without a doubt the Saints' best player this season because whenever they've needed someone to come up with something brilliant the skipper has often provided it. He's been deadly from set pieces and has become a regular in the England squad.

TOTTENHAM - 5

Another very disappointing season. Spurs were top of the table in November with many saying that they were title contenders. But that was soon put to bed as they later slipped out of the top four. They dropped a lot of points from winning positions by sitting back after going in front which is not the Spurs way and it is what lead to Jose Mourinho getting sacked. They've had their worse season in 12 years and a big rebuild is expected from them next season.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: HARRY KANE

Golden boot winner and best playmaker. Who else but Harry Kane. He's shown both sides of his game this season in creating and scoring goals which is making him into a complete player and striker. Spurs would not have finished anywhere near their final position if it wasn't for Kane and they'll have a big struggle on their hands to keep hold of him.

WEST BROM - 3

A terrible season where the inevitable happened. They were not good enough from start to finish. Too many goals conceded and not many goals scored which leads to only one thing. Relegation. Sam Allardyce was brought in to replace Slaven Bilic before Christmas because of his experience in keeping teams up. But the job turned out to be too difficult for him as the squad didn't have enough Premier League experience or quality. It was a difficult job the moment he got it.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: SAM JOHNSTONE

Johnstone has been one of the few shining lights for the Baggies this season by making lots of crucial saves to keep his side in games. His performances were later rewarded with an England call up in March and I wouldn't be surprised if another Premier League club comes calling for him.

WEST HAM - 8

What an incredible season. No one would've seen the Hammers finishing 6th at the start of the season and they've just gone on and done it. David Moyes has done a brilliant job where he has proved many doubters wrong and built a very good and competitive side. If Pep didn't do what he did at City I'm very sure that Moyes would be manager of the season.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: DECLAN RICE

Rice has stepped up as the captain of the side this season in the absence of Mark Noble and he's only 22 years old. He's developed his game as a midfielder by playing more passes through the lines and making the odd run forward plus he's becoming a regular in the England team.

WOLVES - 5

A disappointing season overall considering where they finished for the last two seasons. After two straight 7th placed finishes Wolves endured a tough campaign this time round as they finished 13th and lost key players to either injury or a transfer. Raul Jimenez has been a massive miss because they've missed his goals and goals have been a struggle for Wolves this season. Defensively they haven't been as solid because they've conceded a lot of goals from crosses and set pieces which is something they have to sort out next season. With Nuno gone Wolves could be in for another tough season.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: PEDRO NETO

Neto has without a doubt been Wolves' outstanding performer this season and he's just 21 years old. He stepped up as Wolves' main goal threat in the absence of Jimenez and has become a key player for the club at such a young age.
