Key Points of the opening weekend

Luton to learn harsh lessons

Luton realised how big a step up the Premier League is during their 4-1 defeat at Brighton where they got punished for their mistakes on several occasions. They didn't deserve to lose 4-1 as they had their moments where they threatened. But their mistakes proved costly.

They were so naïve in the way they defended and they got punished for it as Brighton got in behind their defence time and time again. Two of the errors they made are the ones you can't make at Premier League level. Tom Lockyer needlessly gave gave away a penalty that was later converted by Joao Pedro and Kelly Ruddock Mpanzu lost control of the ball just before Simon Adingra pounced and slotted the ball away.

They will have learnt how ruthless the Premier League can be in that game and will need to learn some harsh lessons if they're to stay up.

Everton need striker and now

Everton did everything but score in their opening game against Fulham as they had a lot of chances but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. Scoring goals was their problem last season and it could well be again this season. Unless they buy a proven striker and they need one now.

They did sign Youssef Chermiti last week who is a striker. But he's only 19 and unproven at the top level. If the Toffees are to stay out of another relegation fight this season, they need to sign a more proven and experienced centre forward who can guarantee them 10-15 goals a season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin can be that player on his day, but he can't seem to keep himself fit long enough. They've been waiting for him to get fit for the last two seasons and they've suffered as a result of it. The forward missed the first game against Fulham through injury which could indicate that his injury problems are set to continue this season.

Neal Maupay lead the line in Calvert-Lewin's absence against Fulham, but he wasn't able to impact the game. He hasn't been clinical in front of goal since joining the club last season and his performance against Fulham suggests that he's a player who is low on confidence.

Could Tonali take Newcastle to the next level?

Sandro Tonali had some debut in Newcastle's 5-1 thrashing of Aston Villa as he put in an all-round excellent midfield display. As well as netting on his debut, he made many crucial tackles, broke into the box on a number of occasions and showed off his range of passing. It was a dominant all round display and a good start to his Newcastle career.

I saw him as someone who could take Newcastle to the next level because of the experience he has of playing at a high level. He might only be 23, but he still has experience of playing at a high level after three seasons at AC Milan where he won a Serie A title and reached a Champions League semi final. Having a player with these achievements will be massively beneficial for the Magpies this season and especially as they'll be in the Champions League.

He showed that he was a class above most of the players on the pitch against Aston Villa with the way he ran the show from midfield and you could tell that he's going to bring a lot of quality to this Newcastle team. If he puts in more performances like the one he produced against Villa, he could be someone who could take Newcastle to the next level.

Could James and Chilwell be England's full backs at the Euros?

Reece James and Ben Chilwell look set to play key roles for Chelsea this season because of the way new boss Mauricio Pochettino likes to use his full backs. He likes his full backs to play high up the pitch just like Kyle Walker and Danny Rose did for him at Spurs and both James and Chilwell did that in the blues' opening game against Liverpool.

Both of them caused Liverpool a lot of problems from wide positions and their individual performances will be a big plus for Chelsea moving forward. With the success they're likely to have at club level, Could they be England's first choice full backs at the Euro's next summer?

The pair of them are likely to develop a partnership over the course of the season and their understanding of each other and how they play could be a massive benefit for Gareth Southgate. Kyle Walker and Luke Shaw may be the first choice full backs for the time being but James and Chilwell will look to push them if they continue the way they're playing.

They'll definitely get opportunities to play together for their country between now and the end of the season as Gareth Southgate looks to build his team and squad ahead of the Euros next summer. Both players should definitely make his final squad as they're both two of the best full backs for their country. If they can keep playing the way they are for the rest of the season, they could dislodge Walker and Shaw and become England's first choice full backs.
