Frank Lampard sacked by Chelsea: Was it the right decision?

Frank Lampard was sacked by Chelsea earlier today with the club 9th in the Premier League, 9 points off the top, five points outside the top four and just two wins in eight games. Their poor form was probably the main reason for sacking the club legend but their win over Luton in the FA Cup could've been the confidence boost they needed to kick-start their season. But in the end Roman Abramovich did what he usually does in sacking yet another manager.

I felt that Lampard should've been given more time because he was brought in to build a good side for the future by bringing through the young players plus he signed a lot of players in the summer who needed time to settle in. With the amount of players he brought in at the start of the season, he should've been given time to build a team capable of competing at the top of the Premier League because the new players needed time to settle in with it being a different league in a different country. They spent a lot of money on Timo Werner and Kai Havertz and those two haven't delivered when a lot of people were expecting to because they both cost a lot of money with Havertz costing £71 million and Werner costing £47.6 million. You could say that Chelsea overspent because they didn't need to bring in too many players and when you do that, you need to find a place for them in the team which is what Frank Lampard failed to do.

The pressure was off him last season because Chelsea were under a transfer ban and he benefitted from that as he lead them to a 4th place finish in the Premier League and an FA Cup final. But when you sign players in your first transfer window and a lot of them, the pressure is on because you're expecting the new signings to improve the team and help the team kick on. The signings Chelsea made in the summer haven't done that and it has unfortunately cost Lampard his job as he was the one who signed them.

In terms of who will replace him, Thomas Tuchel is the front runner with Chelsea expected to announce him within the next few days. Tuchel was sacked by PSG last month and would be a good appointment for Chelsea if he got the job. This is because he has more experience of managing world class players in Neymar and Kylian Mbappe from his time at PSG where he won the league in both of his seasons in charge as well as leading them to a Champions League final. Lampard had no experience of managing high profile players before this season and to manage a club like Chelsea, you need that experience and that could be another reason why Lampard was sacked.

In the end I felt Lampard should've been given more time as he was part of a new project at Chelsea. But at the same time I felt the job was a bit big for him as he didn't have a lot of managerial experience after one year at Derby. I hope he gets back into management soon and hopefully he will learn something to take into his next job in order for him to develop as a manager.
