Euro 2024 Predictions: Matchweek 3

GROUP A

SUNDAY:

SWITZERLAND V GERMANY

Switzerland had their chances against Scotland on Wednesday including two goals that were disallowed for offside. But they weren't able to take them and their draw might be seen as a missed opportunity.

They only need a draw from this game and they're through with Scotland having just one point and Hungary having none.

Germany weren't as fluent against Hungary as they were against Scotland, but they still got the job done and played well enough to win the game.

Julian Nagelsmann's side might rest some players for this one with their place in the last 16 already confirmed. But he might want to use his big guns as he'll want his side to top the group and they're also up against a Switzerland side who are not easy to play against.

The Swiss will make it difficult for the Germans like Hungary did on Wednesday. But I think the Germans will have enough quality to win the game.

PREDICTION: 0-2

SCOTLAND V HUNGARY

Scotland were much improved against Switzerland as they had more energy about them and had more of a go from an attacking point of view.

Their performance will give them confidence heading into this game and they'll come into it with a realistic chance of making the last 16.

Hungary had their moments against Germany as they caused them a few problems both from open play and from set pieces.

Dominik Szoboszlai in particular was a threat and he'll no doubt look to cause Scotland some problems with his deliveries into the box. Just like he caused Germany problems with his deliveries into the box.

Scotland will carry a lot of confidence with them into this game following their improved performance against Switzerland, but Hungary will not make it easy for them as they're a tough side to play against.

Because of this, I think Marco Rossi's side will send the Scots home.

PREDICTION: 0-2

GROUP B

MONDAY:

CROATIA V ITALY

Croatia were a much improved side in the second half against Albania, but they weren't able to see the game out after turning the game around.

The Croats have looked very open defensively at this tournament and I can see Italy expose that weakness in this one, like Spain and Albania did.

Italy were sloppy against Spain in a game where they were second best throughout. They barely tested the goalkeeper and gave the ball away countless times.

They do have the players to punish Croatia's vulnerabilities and I can see them do that with the pace of Pellegrini and Chiesa out wide.

PREDICTION: 0-3

ALBANIA V SPAIN

Albania got a deserved draw against Croatia on Wednesday and they arguably deserve more with the performances that they've put in.

They've given both Italy and Croatia a good game at this tournament and they'll want to do the same against Spain. They'll certainly believe that they can.

Spain were impressive against Italy on Thursday and they probably should've won by more with the opportunities they had.

Nico Williams and 16 year old Lamine Yamal have both impressed at this tournament and are both set to be key players for the national team in the future. If Spain go far, they could both be in contention for young player of the tournament.

Luis de la Fuente's side might make changes for this game with their last 16 place secured, but they might want to stick with the side they've used in their last two games so they can seal top spot in the group.

Whether they make changes or not, I still think they'll have enough to win this game as they do have some decent squad players.

PREDICTION: 0-2

GROUP C

TUESDAY:

ENGLAND V SLOVENIA

England have been pretty underwhelming so far at this tournament and they'll need to show a response here after a flat performance against Denmark.

What frustrates me about them is that they sit back after going in front instead of going for the second goal. They got away with it against Serbia and it cost them against Denmark.

Slovenia also won't make it easy for them as they're tough to beat and a threat on the counter attack, as seen in their draw with Denmark.

They might be the worst team in the group, but England still shouldn't underestimate them as they are a dangerous side.

I think England will respond though as they will have had a few days to look back at the Denmark game and work on things that went wrong for them.

Because of this I think they'll win here and book their place in the last 16.

PREDICTION: 2-0

DENMARK V SERBIA

Denmark were the better side against England on Thursday and especially after going behind, where England just sat back.

Kasper Hjulmand's side are still without a win at this tournament, but they know that a win here will secure their place in the last 16.

Serbia are also without a win at this tournament and they needed a last minute equaliser from Luka Jovic to rescue a point against Slovenia.

They're still in with a very good chance of making the knockout stages and they'll have to win this one to make sure of it.

But with Denmark having better technical players and more experience in major tournaments, I think they'll come out on top here.

PREDICTION: 2-1

GROUP D

HOLLAND V AUSTRIA

I felt sorry for Holland during their draw with France and especially after having a goal wrongly disallowed for offside. Dumfries was in an offside position when the goal was scored, but he was not interfering with play as he wasn't in the keepers line of sight. How the goal wasn't given I'll never know.

Austria were very good in the second half against Poland as they were the dominant side with the better chances.

They put in a decent showing in their opening game against France and they'll be looking to put in another one here.

The Dutch aren't the most convincing side in front of goal as they do miss a lot of chances and lack an out and out goal scorer.

But I do think they'll have enough quality to see themselves through. But I don't see it being a straightforward win for them.

PREDICTION: 1-0

FRANCE V POLAND

France should have Kylian Mbappe back for this one after he missed their draw with Holland on Friday, which was understandable having only had a few days training.

The French were again not at their best against the Dutch, but they did have one or two decent chances that they should've taken. The one from Griezmann in the first half being one of them.

Poland are already eliminated following their defeat to Austria on Friday where they didn't offer much of a threat, even after Robert Lewandowski came on. He had no service whatsoever.

France are yet to hit their stride at this tournament, but I do think they'll begin to find their groove in this one. Especially with Mbappe back and Poland not being exactly water-tight defensively.

PREDICTION: 2-0

GROUP E

WEDNESDAY:

UKRAINE V BELGIUM

Ukraine were much improved in the second half against Slovakia after being second best for much of the first.

Their keeper kept them in the game in the first half and I can see him start this one as well. He was more convincing than Lunin was against Romania.

Belgium got their campaign up and running against Romania on Saturday where they put in a dominant display. They played some excellent football on the day and Kevin De Bruyne in particular was his usual outstanding self.

I felt sorry for Romelu Lukaku for having yet another goal disallowed for offside in that game which looked very tight. I thought he was on when I saw the first replay and I was shocked that it was disallowed as I thought he was onside.

This is a must win for both teams who like the other two teams, have three points each.

I think Belgium will claim the victory as I think they'll have more than enough quality to see themselves through.

PREDICTION: 0-2

SLOVAKIA V ROMANIA

Slovakia were on top in the first half against Ukraine which was no doubt a missed opportunity for them. Had they won that game, they would've found themselves in a very good position heading into this one.

Romania had a good go against Belgium and even after they went behind early as they responded reasonably well.

They'll have a lot of the ball in this one as they're a side who like to play on the front foot. But I don't think they'll get as many chances as they would like as Slovakia set themselves up to be rigid and tough to beat defensively.

Slovakia will also cause problems on the counter attack and I can see them doing that here. I can see them nick it here with a goal on the counter.

PREDICTION: 1-0

GROUP F

CZECH REPUBLIC V TURKEY

Czech Republic had a lot of chances against Georgia, but they weren't able to take them and those missed chances could cost them a place in the last 16.

That draw will definitely be seen as a missed opportunity and a big one as it was arguably their most winnable game in the group.

Turkey looked open against Portugal but they did have some decent opportunities of their own.

They'll expect a tough game here as the Czech's will make it difficult for them like they made it difficult for Portugal in the opening game.

But I think Turkey will have enough to come out on top here as I can see them find a way to win the game.

PREDICTION: 1-2

GEORGIA V PORTUGAL

Georgia had some good chances against the Czech Republic including that one at the very end from Saba Lobjanidze. That chance was quite possibly their best one of the game and they didn't take it.

But they'll still be happy with the draw as it keeps them in the hunt for a place in the last 16. But their chances of doing that will be very slim as they're about to face their first big test of the tournament in the form of Portugal.

Portugal might make changes for this one as they secured their place in the last 16 with their win over Turkey on Saturday.

But Roberto Martinez may want to stick with his big guns as he'll want his side to top the group.

It was fluid display from them against Turkey and I can see them follow that up with another one here.

PREDICTION: 0-4
