Gareth Southgate announced his latest England squad yesterday ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. There are no new faces to the squad, but there is a recall for Callum Wilson.
Let's see what I think of the squad.
I was surprised to see Callum Wilson recalled as I wasn't expecting Southgate to call up three central strikers. But I do think he deserves to be back in the squad as he's been in good form for Newcastle recently. His good form earned him a place in my Team of the Month for October.
In terms of the rest of the squad, I'm very surprised to see Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips and Conor Gallagher included. Henderson is playing in a league that is a level or two below the Premier League, Phillips still can't get a game at Man City and Gallagher hasn't done enough for Chelsea to warrant himself a call up. He might be playing regularly, but I don't think he's been in good enough form to earn himself a place in the squad.
Aaron Ramsdale is arguably a surprise inclusion as he's lost his place in the Arsenal team to David Raya. But with there being no other English keeper in good form, you could probably understand why he's still included.
