Gareth Southgate picked his England squad earlier today ahead of their friendly against Wales and their Nations League clashes against Belgium and Denmark next week. Three new faces were picked in the squad with Dominic Calvert Lewin, Harvey Barnes and Bukayo Saka earning their first senior call ups.
Dominic Calvert Lewin deserves his call up because he's started the season on fire with eight goals in all competitions so far this season. He's improved a lot as a player since Carlo Ancelotti took over at Everton and he might've been in the squad back in March if football wasn't suspended due to the Coronavirus outbreak because he was in decent form back then too. Harvey Barnes deserves his call up as well because he's made a good start to the season by putting in some impressive performances for Leicester. He did pretty well for the foxes last season as well and could've earned himself a call up in football wasn't suspended back in March. I'm quite surprised that Bukayo Saka got called up because I wasn't expecting him to and he hasn't played much in the league. I can see why he's in because we haven't got many left backs in form at the moment plus Southgate may want to use him as a wing back if England do play a back three during the international break.
In terms of the rest of the squad, I'm surprised that Kyle Walker is in because I didn't think that he would be called up after his red card against Iceland. A lot of others probably thought that his England career was done after getting sent off but Gareth Southgate still wants to consider him in his squad. I was expecting Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford to return to the squad after withdrawing from the last squad due to injury. This is because they're both key players for England and they would both be in the squad if it wasn't for injury. I thought Kalvin Phillips would be called again because he's made a good start to Premier League life with Leeds and also Danny Ings because he's made a good start with Southampton.
