Gareth Southgate announced his final 26 man squad ahead of the Euros yesterday a week after naming a provisional 33 man squad. There weren't any new names to the squad which was probably expected but Southgate did name injured duo Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson.
I thought both Maguire and Henderson would miss out because they ended the season out injured and they're short on match fitness because of that. Going into a major tournament you'd want your players to be match fit so they can be 100% ready for the tournament. With those two having knocks they may not be at their best. We took Jack WIlshere to the 2016 Euros when he played about 3 games for Arsenal in the lead up and he did not look match fit at all. Hopefully Henderson and Maguire will gain some match fitness during the two warm up games against Austria tonight and Romania on Sunday.
In terms of the rest of the squad I'm surprised that Jude Bellingham has been selected because I was expecting James Ward Prowse to be in due to the season he has had. But at the same time I can see why Bellingham has been selected because Southgate will want to give him some tournament experience as he's a young player at 17. I'm also surprised that four right backs have been in involved in Trent Alexander Arnold, Kyle Walker, Kieron Trippier and Reece James. I was expecting at least three of those players to be selected as that has been the amount in recent squads as well as at the 2018 World Cup in Russia when we took Walker, Trippier and Alexander Arnold. They all deserve to be in the squad. But I'm just surprised that they're all in at the same time.
I was expecting Jesse Lingard and James Ward Prowse to be involved because I didn't think Henderson or Bellingham would be included. Both Lingard and Ward Prowse were in good form towards the end of the season and has decent seasons overall with Lingard scoring 9 times and Ward Prowse scoring 8. I'm not surprised that James Maddison didn't get selected as he hasn't featured in an England squad for a long time but I'm also surprised that he's missed out because of the decent season he's just had with Leicester. I was expecting Sam Johnstone because Nick Pope is ruled out with a knee injury plus JOhnstone himself has had a decent season with West Brom despite conceding a lot of goals.
