Argentina great Diego Maradona has just died at the age of 60 due to a heart attack. This is what I think of the former player.
Diego Maradona was perceived as one of the greatest players of all time because of his silky skills and the amazing goals he scored. He invented his own skill called the "Maradona Turn" which many people across the world have tried replicating and he himself did it many times on the pitch. His goal against England at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico is arguably the best goal he ever scored because of the amount of England players he beat during his run from his own half before rounding Peter Shilton to score the goal. That goal was later voted goal of the century. He scored other great goals throughout his career for both club and country which is what made him the player we know him as today.
Maradona played a starring role for Argentina as they won the World Cup in 1986 in which he captained the side and was named as the best player at the tournament by winning the Golden Ball award. It was at that World Cup where he showed why he is one of the greatest footballers of all time because of the displays he put in as Argentina won the famous trophy.
His career was however filled with controversy. Before scoring the goal of century against England at the 1986 World Cup, he was labelled as a cheat as he scored with his hand later called the "Hand of God." He was tested positive for cocaine in 1991 and was increasingly addicted to it as his weight increased massively. He was sent to hospital in 2004 due to an overdose of the drug and he gradually got better. Whilst at the 1994 World Cup in the USA, he failed a drugs test and was later sent home leaving him a disgrace. The failed drugs test was the end of his international career.
Despite his controversy, Maradona still remains one of the greatest players of all time because of the good stuff he did on the pitch. He was admired by many players and will remain an icon for what he did on the pitch.
