Is VAR making our referees look bad?
VAR has been a massive talking point ever since it came into the Premier League at the beginning of last season and its controversies have carried on into this season. With many of the referees decisions being overturned by the technology itself and some of them looking like the wrong decision; Is VAR making our referees look bad? One example of VAR that took place on Wedesday when Phil Jagielka was sent off for Sheffield United against Aston Villa. Referee Robert Jones originally booked Jagielka for a foul on Anwar El Ghazi and that look like the right decision. Jones then went over to the pitch side monitor after being told to by the officials at Stockley Park where he reviewed his decision. He later gave Jagielka a straight red because it looked like the defender was denying a goal scoring opportunity. The original decision looked like the correct one because Jagielka was not the last man between the goalkeeper and the line of the defence and the attacker was in a wide decision. These kind of decisions have happened quite a few times this season and if they continue, VAR could well and truly be ruining the game.
Can Gabriel Jesus still be City's long term replacement for Aguero?
Gabriel Jesus has always been considered as a talented player sine he's been at City. But his goal return and performances as a striker have often been questioned whenever he fills in for Sergio Aguero. But after netting twice in City's 4-1 win over Wolves on Tuesday; Can he still be City's long term replacement for Aguero? Jesus does a lot of good work off the ball in pressing high and working the channels which is what he's done ever since he arrived at the club back in 2017. Despite working hard for the team, he hasn't always been scoring the goals which he has often been criticized for. He has scored a lot of goals for City during his time at the club but not on a consistent basis like Sergio Aguero has done. He's netted 6 times in the league this season and his two goals against Wolves along with his performance will hopefully give him the confidence to bag more on a regular basis. His teammate Riyad said after the Wolves game that he always wants to score goals and that could give him some much needed motivation.
Are Man United missing Paul Pogba?
After being top of the league in early to mid January, Man United have fallen off the pace a lot as they're now 14 points behind leaders City. They've drawn five of their last seven games and that drop off in form could be down to absence of Paul Pogba who has missed their last four in the league. So are United missing Paul Pogba? Pogba has had a fair bit of criticism since he's been at United but when he's been on it, he's been brilliant. He's got an excellent range of passing and he also has lots of energy which enables him to make those runs into the box from deep positions. United haven't had that kind of player during the Frenchman's absence because they've struggled to break teams down and Pogba is the one who who plays that killer pass to break up a defence when he's on it. United have relied a lot on Bruno Fernandes in recent games because of the creative genius he is. But he can't do it all by himself. If a fully focused Paul Pogba is in that team, he eases the pressure off of Fernandes by playing passes in behind those stubborn defences. United's next game could show us if they're really missing Pogba because they're up against rivals City in the Manchester Derby.
Can Dele Alli keep his place in the Spurs team?
Dele Alli started a Premier League game for the first time since the opening day of the season in Spurs win over Fulham on Thursday night. He almost marked his Premier League return with a goal only for it to be an own goal by Tosin Adarabioyo. His performance overall was good as he made runs into the box and played a key role in the only goal of the game. So can he keep his place in the Spurs team after a good performance in his first league start since September? Alli impressed in the Europa League prior to this game with his standout moment being that bicycle kick against Wolfsberger where he also got two assists. After not playing much during the season, Alli is beginning to return to his best form by working hard in training which has lead him to put in good performances on the pitch. His performances in the Europa League encouraged Jose Mourinho to start him against Fulham and if he can produce more of those, he could well keep his place in the team.
Is Mason Mount becoming Chelsea's go to man?
Mason Mount netted for the third away game in a row in Chelsea's 1-0- win over Liverpool in midweek. He's been one of their most consistent performers this season and is now one of the first names on the team sheet. This got me asking if he is becoming Chelsea's go to man. He may be just 22 years old, but Mount is already becoming a key player for Chelsea by scoring goals and creating chances along with it. He can play in a variety of positions and he does a decent job for the team where ever he's asked to play whether that is as a no.10, no.8 or out wide. He's developed into a key player for both club and country over the last one or two years and is set to have a good future in the game with former Chelsea left back Ashley Cole saying that he is a future Chelsea captain which is a big statement from a former player. If he can keep his head down and continue what he's doing on the pitch, he could become Chelsea's main man because of how consistent he is.
