Premier League 2022-23 season review: Every Club Rated

We have finally reached the end of a season like no other. There was plenty of drama, many surprise packages, a high number of managerial casualties and a lot of controversy. Now lets rate every club's season out of 10 based on the seasons' they've had.

ARSENAL - 9

Missing out on the title will be a big disappointment and especially after spending most of the season in top spot. But it's still been a fantastic season as they comfortably achieved their pre-season goal in finishing in the top four and made a huge amount of progress by challenging for the title. It will feel like a missed opportunity for them but they can still feel proud with the season they've had.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: MARTIN ODEGAARD

Bukayo Saka had another great season for me Odegaard was the difference for them. His leadership and presence on the pitch played a huge part in the Gunners' title challenge as he ran the show from midfield many times with his creativity, goals and personality.

ASTON VILLA - 7

It might have been a season of two halves but for them to go from a potential relegation scrap to challenging for Europe is some turnaround. Unai Emery made a massive impact the moment he replaced Steven Gerrard back in November as he gave them an identity and made the majority of his players better. The owners wanted a top 10 finish and a challenge for Europe and Emery went one better by qualifying for Europe itself.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: OLLIE WATKINS

Watkins emerged as a key player for Villa following Emery's appointment with his goals playing a crucial role in their rise up the table. The departure of Danny Ings definitely played a part in his form as it gave him the chance to step up as the main man and he took it instantly.

BOURNEMOUTH - 7

Tipped by many as the favourites to go down and they went on to stay up rather comfortably. Scott Parker was sacked after saying that his side aren't good enough to compete at this level after their 9-0 defeat at Liverpool early on in the season. Gary O'Neil later came in and made them competitive by making them tough to beat and a well drilled side. He was appointed on a full time basis after impressing as a caretaker and he later comfortably guided them to safety thanks to a strong January transfer window.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: PHILIP BILLING

Billing was the Cherries' most consistent performer as he offered a goal threat from midfield and provided lots of energy in the middle of the park. He scored a number of crucial goals as the Cherries comfortably avoided relegation and his endless energy made him a key player for them this season.

BRENTFORD - 8

Another brilliant season in the top flight for Thomas Frank's side. The Bees comfortably avoided the second season syndrome as they finished in the top 10 and even put themselves in the conversation for Europe. They had an excellent home record throughout the season and also had a good record against the big teams beating the likes of Man City twice, Liverpool, Man United, Spurs and Chelsea.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: IVAN TONEY

Toney established himself as a Premier League striker this season as he netted 20 goals to help the Bees finish 9th. He may be banned for eight months for breaking betting rules but without his goals the Bees might not have had the season they had. He his good form was rewarded with an England call up.

BRIGHTON - 9

An excellent season from start to finish. Graham Potter's departure may have been a blow at the time but Roberto De Zerbi came in and continued the good work his predecessor did. It did take time for him to get going but once he did he got them playing an exciting brand of football and took them onto a completely different level. He lead them into Europe and got them scoring lots of goals which had been their achilles heal for a few years.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER

The World Cup winner played in a slightly deeper position than usual this season and it helped him develop as a player. His form peaked after winning the World Cup with Argentina as he ended the campaign as the Seagulls' top scorer with 10 goals and it's no surprise to see some of the big clubs after him.

CHELSEA - 4

A terrible season both on and off the pitch. Poor decisions being made off it in terms of recruitment and choice of managers and too many poor performance on it. They looked disjointed for most of the season as a result of their over spending in the transfer market which lead them to falling so far down the table and to Graham Potter getting the sack. They should've stuck with Thomas Tuchel in the first place and new boss Mauricio POchettino has a big job on his hands next season.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: THIAGO SILVA

Silva was without a doubt the blues' most consistent performer in what was an absolute shocker of a season. He put in solid performances whenever he stepped out onto the pitch thanks to his experience and reading of the game and is showing no signs of slowing down at the age of 39.

CRYSTAL PALACE - 6

They might've almost got sucked into a relegation fight but overall it was another solid season from the Eagles. The decision to sack Patrick Vieira may have been a bit harsh at the time as they were still in a decent position despite being a few points off the relegation zone. But Roy Hodgson returned and made an instant impact as he steered them away trouble and kept them a good distance away from the relegation places.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: JOACHIM ANDERSEN

Palace looked reasonably solid defensively right throughout the campaign and Andersen was key to that. He was solid at the back for most of the season and was arguably the Eagles' most consistent performer given their struggles at the other end.

EVERTON - 5

They might've stayed up again but it was another poor season from them. They were a mess both on and off the pitch in terms of the way the club was being run off it and the number of poor performance on it. Both of which lead them to being in the situation they found themselves in. Big changes needed at board room level if they're to avoid being in this situation again next season.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: JORDAN PICKFORD

Pickford kept the Toffees in games time and time again this season and was hands down their most consistent performer. He made many big and crucial saves right throughout the season and without him the Toffees would've definitely gone down.

FULHAM - 8

An excellent first season back in the top flight. Recruitment was much improved and they also learnt their lessons from their previous two spells by being more solid defensively and more adaptable during games. A top 10 finish marks an excellent first season back in the big time for Marco Silva's side who even put themselves in contention for Europe around January/February time.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: ALEKSANDAR MITROVIC

Mitrovic silenced his doubters this season by scoring 14 goals which is his best return in any top flight season. HIs goals were crucial to the Cottagers having the season they had and without him they might not have finished any where near where they did.

LEEDS - 3

A dreadful season on and off the pitch. On the pitch they conceded the most goals in the league with 78 and lacked a clear identity in the way they played. Their lack of an identity was down to the mess they were in behind the scenes as they went through three different managers who all failed to make an impact. Jesse Marsch couldn't get results over the line and it later cost him his job. Things weren't much better under Javi Gracia either as they carried on conceding goals and many of them during his short reign. Sam Allardyce was meant to make them tougher to beat but his arrival came too late as he didn't have enough games to turn things around. Big changes behind the scenes needed this summer if they're to bounce back.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: RODRIGO

Rodrigo was Leeds's only major goal threat this season as he ended the campaign as their top goal scorer with 13. He stepped up on the goals front when they needed someone to and was quite possibly their most consistent performer.

LEICESTER - 3

An absolutely dreadful season from start to finish. They did pick themselves up heading into the World Cup break but when they came back the wheels came off. Letting go of Kasper Schmeichel in the summer was a big mistake as they looked defensively all over the place and had no leaders on the pitch to provide some organisation. Brendan Rodgers will carry some of the blame as he couldn't get the most out of the layers he had but it wasn't all his fault. The board didn't back him in the summer to refresh his squad and they also didn't get a replacement in sooner with Dean Smith not being able to make an impact.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: JAMES MADDISON

Maddison was arguably the only shining light for the Foxes this season as he carried the team for pretty much the entire season. He was a massive miss for the Foxes when he wasn't available and without his contributions, they would've gone down a lot earlier. He surely won't be at the club next season.

LIVERPOOL - 5

I had the reds down to win the title at the start of the season as they went so close last season. A prediction I got badly wrong indeed. They did have some good moments during the season and they did end it strongly. But overall it was a big disappointment as they looked low on energy for most of the campaign and missed out on a top four finish. A massive summer ahead for them if they're to get back to their old standards.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: ALISSON

In what was a disappointing season, Alisson was the only one who can hold his head up high. He kept the reds in games many times over the course of the season with the big saves he made and without him they would've finished a lot lower down the table.

MAN CITY - 9

Another fantastic season which could turn out to be their best one yet. They did take time to get going after the World Cup but when the business end to the season arrived, they were back to their best as they went on an incredible run of form to return to the top and win the title which is what they do pretty much every season. They could even end the season with a treble with both the FA Cup and Champions League finals still to come.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: ERLING HAALAND

It just had to be. Haaland has taken City onto another level with the amount of goals he's scored this season which pretty much carried City towards the title. He broke all kinds of records in his first season in England and is likely to wrap up every end of season award going.

MAN UNITED - 7

A solid first season for Erik Ten Hag as he guided his side to Carabao Cup glory and a top four finish. Recruitment was much better with the signings he made and the team are finally playing with a clear identity which is something they didn't have for a number of years. They still have a lot of work to do if they're to return to the top but overall it's been a big year of progress.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: MARCUS RASHFORD

Rashford has been a player reborn this season as he's looked more confident which wasn't the case last season. His 17 goals were crucial to United finishing in the top four as he carried the team for the majority of the season by being their main attacking threat.

NEWCASTLE - 9

What an incredible season considering where they were about 18 months ago. The Magpies were battling relegation for the whole of last season and for them to go from that to a top four finish is some achievement. Eddie Howe has done an incredible job since he took over as he's completely changed the fortunes of the club and given them an identity.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: NICK POPE

The Magpies have had the joint best defence this season and Pope played a major part in that. His presence between the sticks made the Magpies such a solid team defensively as he made countless top class saves to keep them in games on many occasions. His 14 clean sheets were crucial to the Magpies being tough to beat and to securing Champions League football.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST - 6

In what was a rollercoaster first season back in the top flight, Forest did the unthinkable and stayed up. It took them time to get going after a crazy summer where they saw more than 25 new players come through the door. But Steve Cooper worked his magic, found his best team and lead them to safety thanks to their excellent home form which carried them for their majority of the campaign. He deserves a lot of credit for the job he's done this season. Especially after his job was under threat twice during the season.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: MORGAN GIBBS-WHITE

Out of all the many signings they made this season, Gibbs-White was the best of the lot and their most influential player this season as a whole. His 5 goals and 8 assists were key to Forest staying up and when they needed someone to step up on the attacking front, he did exactly that.

SOUTHAMPTON - 2

An absolute shocker of a season both on and off the pitch. Recruitment and decision making off the pitch were a complete disaster whilst on the pitch they put in too many terrible performances. The appointment of Nathan Jones was a disaster as the team got considerably worse and it was no surprise to see him sacked and replaced by Ruben Selles under whom things didn't get much better. They were poor at both ends of the pitch as they conceded a lot of goals and didn't score enough goals with both leading them to relegation.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: JAMES WARD-PROWSE

The Saints skipper carried his side for the entire season and without him they would've gone down a lot earlier. They were too reliant on him to bail them out of trouble from a set piece and he'll surely not want to stick around in the Championship next season.

TOTTENHAM - 4

After a pre-season of promise the season itself turned into a complete disaster as they missed out on European football. Too many uninspiring performances saw Antonio Conte sacked alongside his explosive post-match press conference after throwing away a three goal lead against Southampton. Things were pretty much the same under his assistant Cristhian Stellini who also got the chop following some poor results. The club are in right old mess and a major clear-out is needed this summer.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: HARRY KANE

It was shocking season for Spurs but Kane still did what he does best in scoring goals and he got 30 of them. He carried Spurs for the entire season and with the mess the club are in alongside their lack of silverware, he'll surely be looking to make a move in the summer with his contract up next year.

WEST HAM - 5

They've been excellent in Europe but in the league it was a disappointing season. They've been pushing for Europe for the last couple of seasons and this year they were so far off as they found themselves battling relegation. It could be still be their best season yet with a Europa Conference League final to look forward to but a big improvement is needed next season if they're to stay out of another dogfight.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: DECLAN RICE

It might not have been his best season but when the Hammers needed someone to step up, Rice did exactly that. He showed a lot of character in his performances towards the end of the season and his leadership during that stage was crucial to the Hammers getting themselves over the line. He made some crucial contributions at both ends and the club will have a big job on their hands to try and keep hold of him.

WOLVES - 6

It was a season of two halves for the Molineux club with the first half being very poor and the second half being very strong. A poor start saw the club bottom at Christmas until Julen Lopetegui who came in before the World Cup break got them playing and comfortably secured their Premier League status. To finish mid-table after being bottom at Christmas is some achievement. But carrying this momentum into next season could be tough with Lopetegui's future in doubt due to the club's financial situation.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON: JOSE SA

Sa has kept Wolves in games many times this season and was arguably their most consistent player. He made many crucial saves when his team needed him to and his presence between the sticks was crucial to Wolves staying up as he makes a massive difference for them defensively.
