Women's Euro 2022: England profile

The Women's Euro's kick off a week today with England being one of the favourites to win the tournament as well as being the host nation.

As we build up to the tournament itself I've decided to do a profile on their team which includes a short assessment of their squad, the group they're and the teams they'll be facing in that group and who is likely to be in their starting up.

Let's see what I think of their chances.

PREDICTED STARTING LINE UP

Mary Earps will probably be their first choice keeper given that she's been given the no.1 jersey and has played the two recent friendlies against Belgium and Holland. She had a solid season with Man United and is likely to be in ahead of Ellie Roebuck for these very reasons.

In terms of the defence Lucy Bronze will obviously start at right back as she's one of the best players around in that position and is clear first choice there.

Millie Bright is a shoe-in at centre back as she's England's best player in that position and Alex Greenwood will probably partner her there having played in that position against the Netherlands.

I do prefer Greenwood at left back as she offers more in that position but it looks like Rachel Daly will take the left back position as she's been given the no.3 shirt and had a pretty solid game against Holland.

In terms of the midfield it will probably be Leah Williamson and Keira Walsh playing in front of the back four. Williamson is the captain so you'd expect her to start there like you would for any captain and Keira Walsh has been a regular in the side for the last few years which puts her straight in ahead of the experienced Jill Scott.

The attack will be a tough one as England have plenty of options in that department but I do think it will be Beth Mead and Lauren Hemp to start in the wide positions with Georgia Stanway playing in the no.10 role.

Mead made an instant impact when she came off the bench against Holland and with the form she's been in recently, she's surely made a case for herself to start. Hemp also impressed against the Dutch last week and was the winner of the PFA Women's Young Player of the Year last season after a top season with Man City. She'll be one of the players to look out for at this tournament.

The no.10 position will be a toss up between Stanway and Fran Kirby and I think Stanway will get the nod. She had the better season in my opinion in terms of goals plus Kirby missed a lot of games towards the end of the season through injury. Sarina Wiegman will want fully fit players in her strongest line up going into these Euro's which is why I think Stanway will get the nod ahead of Kirby.

The player to lead the attack is without a doubt going to be Ellen White. She'll be the Lionesses main player going into the Euro's and is currently their record goal scorer which pretty much makes her a guaranteed starter.

THEIR GROUP

The Lionesses will be up against Austria, Northern Ireland and Norway in the group stages of this tournament and they should have more than enough to win those games. Norway will be the tricky one as they have former Ballon D'or winner Ada Hegerberg in their side but the Lionesses will be more than capable of beating them because of the quality they possess in attack and their overall strength in depth.

THEIR SQUAD

The Lionesses squad looks very strong because of the strength in depth they have and particularly in attack. The options England have in attack include the likes of Beth Mead, Lauren Hemp, Ella Toone, Chloe Kelly, Nikita Parris, Georgia Stanway, Bethany England and Ellen White as well as one or two others.

Whenever England are in need of a goal towards the end of a game, Sarina Wiegman will be able to look to her bench for answers because of the attacking options she has. Having strength in depth is crucial to any side looking to go far in a major tournament and with the options that England have, they'll surely be seen as one of the favourites to win the tournament.

PREDICTION: Winners

I really fancy England to win these Euro's because of the strength in depth they have plus they have a manager in Sarina Wiegman whose won this tournament before with Holland back in 2017. Home advantage will help massively as they're the host nation and with the strong squad they have, I can see them beat the big hitters and go all the way.
