Talking Points of the Weekend

Chelsea still need striker despite heavy spending

Chelsea were the big spenders during the January transfer window by a long way as they spent over £200 million on new players. But none of those players was a striker who can put the ball in the net on a regular basis.

They had a number of chances against Fulham on Friday night but they weren't able to take any of them. They got into some good attacking positions but they didn't have that centre forward to put the ball in the net which has been the case for them for much of the season. Their result and performance against Fulham suggests that they should've signed an out and out goal scorer in January.

They did sign a striker though in David Jatro Fofana from Molde. But he's someone for the long term rather than the short term as he's just 20 years of age. The blues needed someone for the short term to give themselves a chance of finishing in the European spots because their current strikers haven't been able to give them that cutting edge up top.

Kai Havertz is not an out and out no.9 and he why showed against Fulham with the crucial chances he missed whilst Pierre Emerick Aubameyang is out of favour and no longer the player he used to be. With both players likely to not make much of a difference between now and the end of the season, the blues will probably look back on January and regret not signing a clinical centre forward.

Can Everton kick on under Dyche?

Everton got off to a winning start under new boss Sean Dyche where they beat league leaders Arsenal to earn their first win since October. It was a much improved performance from the Toffees compared to their more recent showings and the main question now will be whether they can kick on from this result.

Their performance will surely give them a lot of confidence along with the result as they'll both give them something to build on. They showed a fighting spirit that haven't showed for most of the season and looked like a team with an identity. Both have rarely been shown this season and they've clearly been brought back by the new manager.

But for them to stay up they need to play like they did against Arsenal on a consistent basis. If they can do that, they have a good chance of staying up and kicking on for the rest of the season.

How long does Jesse Marsch have at Leeds?

Leeds' winless run in the Premier League extended to 8 games following their 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest where their problems in front of goal continued. They now find themselves in 17th and only outside the relegation zone on goal difference. With that and the current form they're in; How long does Jesse Marsch have at the club?

The pressure has been mounting up on the American for the last few weeks with his side struggling to win games and score goals. They've been pulled closer towards the bottom three with the recent results they've had and it won't be long till they possibly find themselves in there. Especially with Everton beginning to turn a corner under Sean Dyche.

The other teams in and around them are also beginning to turn a corner with the likes of Forest, Leicester, Wolves and West Ham pulling themselves clear of danger. With Everton likely to improve under Sean Dyche after their win over Arsenal, Leeds could drop into the bottom three if their form doesn't improve.

They have some big games coming up with clashes against fellow relegation rivals Everton and Southampton coming up after back to back games against Man United. If they don't win at least one of those games, Marsch's job could well be on the line and the club could potentially be in the relegation zone. These games could determine how long he has at the club.
