Talking Points of the Weekend

Is Callum Wilson pushing for an England recall ahead of the World Cup?

This question has been asked for the last week or two because of the form Callum Wilson himself has been in. With the World Cup coming up in just two weeks time, his recent form has come at a good time with four goals in his last six games. So is Wilson pushing for an England recall ahead of the World Cup?

There will no doubt be question marks over his fitness as he does pick up the odd injury from time to time. But when fit he's one of the best strikers in the league on his day as he can score goals and also link up with his teammates. This is what makes him a complete striker.

In terms of strikers who will be going to the World Cup, Harry Kane is no doubt the favourite as he's England talisman and current captain. But there is a question on who will go as back up. Wilson will be in competition with the likes of Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham for that back up spot and his recent form has given him a very good chance of beating that competition in front of him. If he can stay fit for the next couple of weeks and continue scoring goals, he could well force his way into Gareth Southgate's plans.

Chelsea must ditch wing back system

Chelsea's wing-back system was much talked about following their defeat to Brighton on Saturday which was their first defeat under Graham Potter. Playing that system had a huge impact on the result as the wing backs used in Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic didn't get back quick enough to help out the defence when Brighton went forward. Both of those players shouldn't really have been used there as they're wingers instead of full/wing backs which is why Chelsea should ditch that system altogether.

They should use it only if they have players who are more comfortable in that position. They could've used either Marc Cucurella or Ben Chilwell in the left wing-back position as they were both available and are comfortable in playing that position. But Cucurella was instead used in central defence whilst Chilwell started on the bench. They also could've used Cesar Azpilicueta at right wing-back as he can play in that position given that he's an out and out full back. But he was left on the bench. Both Pulisic and Sterling didn't look comfortable there and should therefore be used in their more usual positions instead of at wing-back.

Has Jurgen Klopp taken Liverpool as far as he can?

Liverpool's season took another step backward on Saturday following their defeat to Leeds where they again looked a shadow of their former selves. The midfield looked leggy and defensively were all over the place. These factors have played a massive part in their inconsistent season and after achieving so much success up to this point; Has Jurgen Klopp taken Liverpool as far as he can?

Like Jose Mourinho in his third season, Jurgen Klopp appears to have a seventh season syndrome. He was relegated with Mainz in his seventh season there back in 2007/08 and had a poor seventh season at Borussia Dortmund where they finished 7th in 2014/15. He's currently in his 7th season at Liverpool where he's again struggling after an underwhelming season from his side so far.

It could be his seventh season syndrome striking again or it could be that his Liverpool side have reached the end of their cycle. Their squad is ageing with nine players from their first team over the age of 30 and some not far behind. They do have some good young players in their squad and coming through from the academy but with most of their squad getting on a bit, this could be a sign of a team reaching the end of it's cycle.

Klopp left Dortmund after his seventh and final season in charge and if Liverpool don't finish in the top four this season, it wouldn't surprise me if he decided to leave.
