Talking Points of the Weekend

Top four race still well and truly alive

The final Champions League spot looked set to be between Arsenal and Spurs going into the weekend with Spurs arguably being the favourites. But their defeats to Southampton and Brighton respectively alongside Man United's win over Norwich have left the race for fourth wide open. Spurs currently lead the way with 57 points and Man United moved level with Arsenal on 54 as a result of their win over Norwich. With all three of them having games in hand between now and the end of the season, it could go down to the final day of the season.

They all have tough games coming up with Spurs and Man United both still to play Liverpool and Arsenal still to play Chelsea. There are also a couple of top four deciders in there with Arsenal taking on both Spurs and United. The other games they all have look winnable and they all should win the majority if not all of them. If they can win all their winnable fixtures and put their inconsistencies behind them, the race for 4th could still be this open going into the final day of the season.

Newcastle now pretty much safe

Newcastle's win over Leicester on Sunday moved them up to 14th and 12 points clear of the relegation zone which should be enough for them to secure their status. They may not be safe mathematically but with the teams below them being closer to the drop and the Magpies themselves being many points clear, they should be good as safe.

They do have to play Liverpool, City and Arsenal which could see the teams below them pick up points but they should be able to win their other remaining fixtures. Their other remaining fixtures against Crystal Palace, Norwich and Burnley are definitely games they should be able to win and they could confirm their Premier League status with a win in at least one of those games. With enough quality in their side to stay up and win those winnable games, Newcastle should no longer worry about the threat of relegation.
