Key Points of the opening weekend

Same Old Arsenal

Arsenal were completely flat in their 2-0 defeat to Brentford on Friday night and it was a performance we've been used to seeing over the last many years. The Gunners have put in limp performances against so called smaller opposition going back to the final few seasons of Arsene Wenger's reign and it appears to be continuing going into this season. No disrespect to Brentford who were excellent throughout, but Arsenal should be beating teams like Brentford. Especially as they're newly promoted.

City need Kane

City had a lot of the ball and a lot of chances during their 1-0 defeat to Spurs on Sunday but didn't take any of them. I think this is because they didn't have a clinical no.9 to put the ball in the net. Ferran Torres started the game in the no.9 position but didn't cause the Spurs defenders problems or get on the end of crosses like an out and out centre forward would. If City are to retain their title they need to get the player they've been after all summer in Harry Kane because he would've put at least one of those chances away. They did win the title playing a false 9 for the majority of last season, but doing it for two straight seasons is a tough ask which is why they need Harry Kane.

Will our referees be under less scrutiny this season?

Our referees have been heavily criticized in the past but their respective performances over the weekend were promising and could suggest that they'll be more consistent than they have been in the past. The referees used over the weekend got the majority of their decisions correct with only one being incorrect which was the penalty that West Ham were wrongly awarded against Newcastle. With VAR set to be used better thanks to the new thicker lines for offside decisions, our referees may not get as much stick as they did in the past. Especially if they learn off the referees used at Euro 2020 who were consistent in pretty much every decision they made.
