Champions League Last 16 Predictions: Part 1 of the 1st Leg

TUESDAY:

AC MILAN V TOTTENHAM

AC Milan have a tough defence of their Serie A title this season as they currently lie in 5th and are 18 points off the top. They did end their end their seven game winless run at the weekend though with victory over Torino which will give them some much needed confidence heading into this one.

Stefano Pioli's side have some former Premier League players in their side who will know all about facing Spurs and what kind of team they are. Their experiences could help Milan in this tie where they'll arguably be the favourites to go through.

Spurs were poor against Leicester at the weekend and especially defensively with the way they conceded the goals. Antonio Conte will need his side to defend better in this one otherwise they'll again get punished because of the calibre of players they'll be up against.

Conte himself doesn't have a great record in the Champions League despite being such a successful manager during his career. He's only gone beyond the last 16 once with Juventus back in the 2012-13 season and has failed to get past that stage ever since.

PREDICTION: 3-1

I'm going for Milan to go ahead in this tie as they have the quality in the final third to win them the game. Spurs rarely start games well and because of that I think Milan will gain the upper hand as they have the attacking players to punish Spurs.

PSG V BAYERN MUNICH

There will be a lot of pressure on PSG going into this tie because of the recent history they have of blowing it at this stage of the competition. They did that last season against Real Madrid where they were leading the tie before bottling it within a matter of minutes.

Their chances of progressing from this stage have already been dealt a major blow as they're likely be without both Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi for this first leg through injury. They'll both be back for the second leg at the Allianz Arena but their chances of reaching the next round could be very slim depending on what the score is here.

Bayern Munich are having a challenging season in the Bundesliga this season with Julian Nagelsmann's side just a point clear at the top. They're usually ahead by many points more because of how dominant they've been for the last 10 seasons and from a neutral point of view it's good to see them being finally challenged.

They haven't had a consistent goal scorer this season and it could be what stops them going all the way in this competition. They have some very good attacking options but have still lacked an out and goal scorer since Robert Lewandowski left. Their top scorer is Jamal Musiala who is more of a no.10 rather than a central striker.

PREDICTION: 0-2

I think Bayern will go ahead in this tie as PSG are likely to be without both Mbappe and Messi. Bayern may be lacking a consistent goal scorer but they still have players who can chip in and I think they'll do that in this one.

WEDNESDAY:

BORUSSIA DORTMUND V CHELSEA

Borussia Dortmund head into this tie off the back of eight straight wins in all competitions which will give them a lot of confidence going into this one. They've climbed from 6th to 3rd in the Bundesliga as a result of their recent form and are just two points behind leaders Bayern.

On the downside they've missed Erling Haaland as they've lacked a consistent goal scorer this season. But they do have Sebastian Haller back and it was good to see him score in his first game back after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. He'll want to prove a point to the English press in this tie after a tough spell over there with West Ham a couple of years ago.

Another player out to prove a point in this game will be Jude Bellingham with Chelsea being one of the many clubs linked with him. He'll want to show his potential future employers how good he is and what he could offer them if he were to join the club.

Chelsea were unlucky against West Ham at the weekend as they should've had a penalty for Tomas Soucek's handball. There were some encouraging signs during the game and that decision not to give them a deserved penalty was probably what cost them.

The Champions League is the only trophy that the blues have left to play for this season as they're out of the other cups and have pretty much nothing to play for in the Premier League. I can't see them go very far though as they're not in great form and are looking like a team in transition after making all those signings in January.

PREDCTION: 2-0

I'm backing Dortmund to gain the upper hand in this tie because they're in better form and have more goals in them. They also look more like a team than Chelsea do at the moment and I think that could give them the edge here.

CLUB BRUGGE V BENFICA

Club Brugge have been the surprise package in the Champions League this season after making it out of a very tough group they weren't expected to qualify from. They'll be more than happy with this tie with being against a side who they'll feel capable of beating.

Everyone involved with the club will be looking forward to this tie with it being their first Champions League knockout game.

Benfica have been another surprise package like they were last season where they reached the Quarter Finals. They made it out and finished top of a tough group containing both PSG and Juventus which is some achievement due to the quality those sides have.

They're currently 5 points clear at the top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga and have lost just once in the league all season. They're very sound defensively having conceded just 12 times all season and they also have the quality in attack to score goals.

PREDICTION: 0-2

I'm backing Benfica to go head in this tie as they'll have the quality to win this game. Brugge will give it a good go like they did during the group stages but Benfica will still have enough to give themselves the advantage here.

PREMIER LEAGUE FIXTURE

ARSENAL V MAN CITY

Arsenal have hit the first blip of the season after a defeat and a draw in their last two games. Some people might see it as a sign that the pressure is getting to them or that they're starting to get nervous. But for me it's just a blip as all teams challenging for the title get one at some stage.

This is the ultimate test for Mikel Arteta's side and one they need to pass if they're to win the title. They've passed every test they've faced this season and this game could determine whether they'll go all the way and the title.

Man City looked back to their best against Aston Villa on Sunday and especially in the first half where they were in control throughout. They were much improved both in and out of possession and it was the perfect response to what has been a tough week for them both on and off the pitch.

City simply have to win this one if they're to defend their title and they may have to do it without their star striker. Haaland went off with an injury at half time against Aston Villa and is a doubt for this game as a result of it. They could really do with him for a game like this as it's one where City need all their best players available if they're to win it.

There is an argument that City are better off without Haaland but they could still do with him for a game like this. The best players in the world usually deliver in these kind of games against teams who are fighting for the same goal as you.

PREDICTION: 2-0

I fancy Arsenal to bounce back here as they're unbeaten at home and have players who can cause the City defence all kinds of problems. With City likely to be without Haaland and yet to find some consistency since the World Cup break, I can see the Gunners show up here and but their recent blip behind them.
